Waves Go 4-0 in Pool Play at Hometown Cup; Earn 3 Seed In Sunday’s Memorial Park Bracket

Pool Play Recap Served by Lovie’s Frosty Twist

The Wiff is Life League Waves went undefeated in their four pool play games on Saturday at the Hometown Cup. They earned the Luther Division championship and a bye into the round of 32 for tomorrow’s single elimination bracket as the 3 seed in the Memorial Park region.

WILL battled through the strong gusting winds to prevail with a +21 run differential.

The Waves opened the day with an extra inning battle against the Billy Goats. Rob Licht provided the only run of the game with a walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth, to win it 1-0. Jake Davey pitched the complete game for WILL.

In game two, the Waves downed the Lil Saints 12-0. Gardner plated WILL’s first two runs with an RBI double in the top of the first and a sac fly in the second. Carosone hit an inside the park homer and Davey belted a two run shot over the right field fence to cap off a four run second inning. WILL extended the lead to 7-0 in the third. In the top of the sixth, the Waves put the score to its final, 12-0, finished off by a Licht two run triple and a Davey two run inside the park homer right after. Davey started the game, on the rubber, and went five innings, Licht came in and recorded the save in the sixth.

At 2 pm, the Waves battled Beef Barn in a tightly contested contest. Beef Barn struck first by scoring on a throwing error by Davey in the first inning. Carosone chased down the overthrow and tossed it back to Davey covering home plate to nail down Beef Barn’s attempt at a second run, keeping the score 1-0. The Waves rallied in the third inning to score two runs. Adam Carosone and Rob Licht both singled to reach to start the inning. Davey grounded out, but Carosone did not put on the breaks and scored from second, eluding the peg attempt. Licht followed Carosone to score after the missed peg. WILL held on throughout the final four innings to win the game. Davey pitched the complete game with stellar defense behind him.

In the pool play finale, WILL rolled to an 8-1 victory. Licht scored on a Davey double in the first. WILL added five in the third, capped off by a Davey inside the park homer. Two more Waves came across in the fifth to make it 8-1. All four Waves, Carosone, Davey, Gardner, and Licht had multiple hits and scored runs. Davey tossed his third complete game of the day.

The Waves earned the 3 seed in the Memorial Park region of the 48 team bracket tomorrow and will take on the winner of Malort! I‘ll Have Another and Beef Barn at 9 am on Field 14. It’s all single elimination from here on out. Follow along on our Twitter @wiffislife for updates throughout the day.
