Recap Served by Lovie‘s Frosty Twist

The WILL Waves finished their first year of competition at the Hometown Cup this morning with a win in the Round of 32 and a loss in the Sweet 16.

In the opening game of the day, WILL was victorious over Malort! I’ll Have Another, 11-9, to move on to the Sweet 16. There, the Waves were eliminated by the Granger Panthers, 18-5.

After a two run top of the first by Malort, the Waves put six runs on the board in the bottom half and did not surrender the lead after that point. Jake Davey got the scoring going for the Waves with a 2-run homer. Adam Carosone plated the third run with an RBI double. Rob Licht homered home Carosone for runs four and five, and singled in Cree Gardner for the sixth run. WILL plated one more in the second and three in the fourth. Then, Licht added a solo homer in the fifth to make it 11-5. Malort did not go quietly, as they had two home runs in the sixth to get within two runs with just one out. Two fly outs ensued and ended the game. Jake Davey threw the complete game win.

WILL got out to a hot start in their Sweet 16 matchup, with back-to-back home runs by Licht and Davey and another Licht homer, which made it 3-0 after a half inning of play. Granger plated six runs in the bottom half of the first. Then, after a second inning shutout of the Waves, Granger added six more to make it 12-3. Licht scored Gardner on an RBI single in the third, and had a solo home run in the sixth to account for the rest of the Waves’ runs. Granger belted multiple home runs throughout the game to total 18 runs. Davey started and allowed 14 runs on the rubber, Licht and Gardner each threw an inning as well.

The Granger Panthers, who won the 2019 Hometown Cup, ended up making it to the championship game. They lost to Maple City Magic.

The 5-1 weekend record improves the Waves season record to 7-6.

The Waves will turn to fast pitch for the remainder of the 2021 season. The NWLA National Tournament is first up in the middle of September. Follow @wiffislife on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for all the latest updates on the Waves.
