The WILL Waves added a sixth tournament to their 2021 season, as they made the trek out to Brighton, Michigan this weekend to compete in the MLW Wiffle Ball Wiffle in the Mitten tournament.
The two day event is split into two pool play games Saturday and a 16 team single elimination bracket on Sunday.
In pool play, the Waves dominated game one and won a back and forth battle in game two on a walk off home run by Jake Davey.
Davey pitched six innings on the day, while Clark and Morris combined for the seventh.
All three Waves hit a grand slam.
Game by Game Recaps:
Game 1: Waves (15), MLW Black (1) F/3
The Waves got a run in the top of the first inning, off a bases loaded walk, to jump ahead early.
In the bottom half, MLW Black led the inning off with a solo home run. After that homer Davey, the Waves starting pitcher, settled in and did not allow another run.
Nate Morris and Davey each hit a grand slam to get up 9-1 in the second.
Then, Brice Clark, Morris, and Davey all ripped 2-RBI doubles to put the run rule into effect.
Game 2: A-Steps Toes (10), Waves (12)
The first batter of the game ripped a home run to put the Waves behind, 1-0, early.
WILL took the lead back, 4-1 after two innings of play. Brice Clark smacked a single off the pitcher to tie the game, then three more runs came across over the bottom of the first and second innings.
AST homered in the top of the third to make the game tied once again, this time 4-4 in the middle of the third.
Clark stepped up for the Waves in the bottom of the third and bombed a grand slam to regain the lead, at 9-4.
Then, the top of the fourth Clark took over on the rubber. He walked first three, then Morris demanded the ball and proceeded to give up a grand slam and walk 4 straight to fall behind 10-9. However, he escaped, keeping the Waves in striking distance, after a strikeout and a fly out ended the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Morris and Clark led off with back-to-back walks. AST made the decision to switch pitchers, and on that pitcher’s second pitch Davey belted a three-run walk off homer.
Next Up:
WILL ended Saturday with a 2-0 record, 11 runs allowed, a +16 run differential, and 27 runs scored.
They will be the 5th seed in tomorrow’s 16-team single elimination bracket. Their first game will be at a to be announced time versus the 12th seeded Salt Buckets.
