Updated: Jun 17, 2021

The WILL Waves opened their 2021 season this weekend at the Mid Atlantic Wiffle Wiffs & Waves tournament. The Waves went 2-1 in pool play to earn the 5 seed in the quarterfinals, before dropping the quarterfinal to ERL.

GAME 1: Waves (5) - Y2B (0)

Jake Davey got the ball for the Waves in the opener and shut down Y2B’s offense. He threw all five innings, struck out nine, walked two, and allowed one hit en route to the Waves victory. On the offensive side, WILL came alive in the top off the fifth, when they used patience at the plate versus a wearing down right hander for Y2B. WILL drew four walks to push across the first run, then Gino Joseph parked a screwball over the centerfield fence for a grand slam, making the game 5-0.

GAME 2: Waves (0) - Yaks (1)

Adam Milstead hit a full count riser over the left field fence in the first at bat of the game, and that would prove to be enough for the Yaks to beat the Waves in each teams second game of the day. Steve Keelon got the start for WILL, but was pulled after Milstead’s home run. Gino Joseph came in and shut down the Yaks for the next 15 outs, as he allowed one hit, struck out 14, and walked just one. Joseph had the lone hit for the Waves, who scattered base runners all game but could not get a run across.

GAME 3: Waves (1) - ERL (0) (F/7)

Gino Joseph threw a gem to outlast the 2 time MAW champions and defending tournament champion, ERL, in the pool play finale. Joseph tossed 7 dominate innings and allowed one hit. The Waves offense was not getting much going either, but a wild pitch in the top of the 7th pushed a run across to get WILL ahead by one.

QUARTERFINALS: Waves (0) - ERL (5)

With an unfortunate draw in the quarterfinals, the fifth seeded Waves had to take on fourth seeded ERL, again. WILL was shut down by Dan Whitner, who threw a no-hitter. ERL got on the board in the 3rd with a three-run home run and then again in the 5th with a two-run homer. Joseph tossed the complete game, where he was solid in his second game against ERL.

The Waves return to the diamond in two weeks, when they take on MAW again at the Wiffle Wars tournament in York, PA.
