Frank Fortunato and Justin Davey return to WILL play for the first time since 2018, and will bring along Jarrod Ross for Opening Day. The team is itching for some baseball-like events, as they are teammates on a local adult league baseball team that's season is on hold.
Frank Fortunato was a member of the LumberKings during the 2018 season, when they fell one win short of a spot in the championship series. Fortunato was a .424 hitter that year with six long balls. In his time on the hard ball diamond, Fortunato was an intrical part of the 2017 Washington and Jefferson College baseball team’s run to the NCAA D3 College World Series, hitting .320 on the season with eight home runs over 169 at bats.
Justin Davey was on that 2018 LumberKings team, as well. He blasted a team best 14 home runs and hit for a .436 average during the campaign. Davey was also the team's leader in innings pitched, as he likely will be at the Opening Day Tournament this Sunday. Tallying 37+ innings from the rubber that year, he held his ERA and WHIP to a very respectable 6.50 and 2.26 in the medium pitch league. Most recently, Davey was a member of the Dawgs in the 2018 FWILL Tournament, where he competed in three games.
Jarrod Ross will be a rookie to the WILL at the Opening Day Tournament. He was a member of the Washington-Greene County Adult Baseball League’s championship team last summer. The right hander is known for his bat in the league and will look to take that talent to the wiff diamond. Some say the greatest fear is the unknown, and that is what he is to the game of wiffle ball.
The LumberKings come into the tournament as the lowest ranked team, but they definitely have the talent to make a surprise run and should not be a look over game for any of their opponents.
