The Wiff is Life League Waves played three closely contested games on Saturday at the Mid Atlantic Wiffle Wars, and unfortunately ended up on the losing side of all of them. The tough day dropped WILL’s season record to 1-5.
In the opening game, Austin Berger threw for the Waves and was opposed by Dave Capobianco, of the New School Risers. In the top of the second Jerry Hill belted a three run home run to left field with two outs. The Waves were unable to get any runners on base all game, as Capobianco recorded a perfect game. Nate Morris threw three batters in the top of the third, he struck out two and walked one. Steve Keelon finished out the final 1.1 innings for WILL untouched.
In the second game against the 2019 MAW Champions, ERL, the Waves fell behind early. Kenny Rodgers led off the game with a solo home run. Steve Keelon answered back in the bottom of the first for WILL with a home run to knot the score at one. Rodgers struck again to lead off the second inning, but WILL didn’t go away. Nate Morris homered in the bottom of the second to tie the game back up at two. The teams then stayed in a stalemate for the next two innings to send the game to extras. Devin Torres pushed two runs across for ERL in the top of the fifth on a two out double. WILL was blanked in the bottom half and moved to 0-2 on the day. Austin Berger was tabbed with the complete game loss for WILL, and Connor Young won it for ERL.
In the Waves final game of the day they took on 2020 MAW Winter Classic champions and Opening Day runner ups, POC. Dan Whitener and Steve Keelon faced off on the rubber. Both rolling through the regulation four innings and the lone clean extra inning. The bases were loaded in the sixth and Tim Beck laced a double to right field to put POC up 3-0. They got one more in the sixth and shut down the Waves in the bottom half for a 4-0 final score. Jake Davey had the lone hit for WILL in the game, a double.
It was a tough draw for WILL. Even with the results not being there, the Waves continue to improve in their still young Mid Atlantic career. ERL, the Waves second opponent, won the tournament.
In a bright spot, the Waves were 3-0 in coin flips on Saturday, which secured them the home designation for each game.
