Winter WILL Wiff Recap

The 2017 Winter WILL went on in full effect on Saturday, January 6th as teams brought non perishable food items to donate to the Greater Washington County Food Bank . This year the tournament was organized as a dual sport affair, which featured a 5v5 Football series and a Wiff game. The wiff game had some players pull out so the 3 men left played all men for themselves wiff. How do you play 3 player, each for themselves? Simple, there was a fielder, a pitcher, and a hitter and then they rotated. Each player batted and threw against the other two players, 3 times, two outs per inning. Then with a 7 inning game, the player got to pick the player who pitched to him for the last inning. Now that, that is settled onward with what happened. The three players were, Jordan Castelli, Jacob Davey, and Nate Morris. In inning 1, Castelli led off the game with a 5 spot while facing Morris, the opposing pitcher. Hit after hit racked up, including a triple and 2 doubles, for Castelli, who did all this with 1 out. Morris and Davey were kept quiet. Throughout the game there were multiple spectacular diving and sliding catches by all 3 fielders, all over the snow covered field. Davey homered to get his first run, meanwhile later in the game Castelli had a home run of his own in another big inning to get him up to 11 runs. Morris at this point is staying steady in the middle of the pack with 5 runs, and Davey barely squeaked by a 10 run rule, by scoring a run in the 6th inning, to bring his total to 2. The 7th inning is now upon us. Castelli comes in with the lead, at 11 runs, and choses to hit off Morris. The final out of the inning could have been costly, as Castelli tried to take an extra base going for a double, Morris fired a laser to Davey who tapped the ball straight down onto Castelli’s sliding leg to make the peg out to end the inning. Castelli’s final score was 11 runs. Morris was now up and he chose Castelli to pitch to him. A quick, scoreless inning ended his first place hopes. Morris ended the day with 5 runs. Lastly, Davey came up to bat and he chose Morris to pitch to him. After narrowly avoiding a 10 run rule elimination last inning, he put together a multitude of singles to bring his run total to 7. Then, with bases loaded and one out, the Morris pitched was launched over the right field fence at Pleasant Valley Fields, to create a tie with Castelli at 11. Just a few pitches later, Davey broke the tie and took home the Winter WILL title with a home run down the right field line. Final results were, Davey (12), Castelli (11), Morris (5). All food donations will be taken to the GWC Food Bank on Monday, Jan. 8. If you have extra non perishable foods, please contact us here to donate them to the food bank. The cold weather affected the ability to video and take a multitude of photos. That’s it for the off season events, up next … the WILL!
